Swiff Spray claims to prevent odor on clothes, so we put it to the test.
With summer in full swing, it’s nearly impossible to keep the sweat and the odors that come with it down. Need a product to deodorize my clothes without washing them, I discovered Swiff Vaporizer, a chemical-free odor protector. Billed as a “deodorant-free way to stay fresh,” it claims to prevent odors on everything from clothes and gym equipment to household fabrics.
Swiff Spray has several unique qualities: it’s 100% natural, water-based, hypoallergenic, and fragrance-free (read: it won’t irritate sensitive skin). Last but not least, it was created by a scientist. I tested Swiff Spray to see if it really resists perspiration and summer odors.
What is Swiff Spray?
Developped by Dr. J.J. Richardson, Swiff Vaporizer is a water-based formula designed to prevent odors on clothing, fabrics, gym equipment, and just about any material or surface prone to foul odors from humans or pets. The pocket spray has two nozzles, one with water and silver nitrate and the second with water and gall nut extract. When sprayed thoroughly on clean clothes (especially the armpit area), it keeps odors away for up to five washes, sometimes longer.
Unlike some odor protectors, Swiff is 100% natural, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. This means it keeps fabrics from getting stinky rather than coating them with perfumes and dyes.
How we tested it
Once my packet of Swiff Vaporizer arrived, I sprayed it in the air to see if it was really odorless. I also tested it on a section of the shirt I was wearing that day. Honestly, Swiff doesn’t feel anything, which makes it even more intriguing. I thought, “How can this stuff work?” So I went to the tests.
Intrigued that Swiff Spray is a “deodorant-free way to stay fresh,” I wanted to see if it outperformed my natural deodorant, which is also aluminum-free. I sprayed it on my clean pits (yes, it’s skin safe) five to 10 times as he suggests, making sure to use five sprays of the water and silver nitrate solution and five sprays of the water and gall nut extract solution.
After a full day of work, it was time for a sniff test. I decided to test the spray while working rather than exercising because I don’t produce a lot of sweat on a normal day. So if it held up during daily activities, I knew I could trust it for outings and trips to the gym. Unfortunately, it didn’t hold up as an alternative to deodorant, so it was back to the drawing board to test again. I didn’t want to write it down right away because while it’s safe on the skin, it says it’s designed to keep the armpit areas of clothes clean, not necessarily the pits themselves.
For my fabric test, I sprayed Swiff Spray on the armpits of my clothes for a full week. And yes, this time I wore my natural deodorant to see if it held up under almost any condition, including activities like working, running errands, exercising, and hanging out at a Rockies baseball game from Colorado. I also sprayed Swiff Spray on dirty clothes to see if it magically revived them, but to my expectations it did almost nothing to my already dirty outfit.
After a few sniff tests at noon and one at the end of each day, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the armpit area on my clothes didn’t stink. Total transparency, my natural deodorant doesn’t always hold, which means I often find that the armpit area of my clothes smells like body odor after rigorous activities. (Let’s just say I’m still figuring out my armpit detox routine – if you’re a natural deodorant wearer, you know the struggle.) So when I found out my clothes weren’t just clean but also odorless, it was clear that Swiff Spray is a faithful companion to my natural deodorant. And it’s my new favorite laundry hack, next to my favorite laundry detergent, of course.

Swiff Vaporizer has a number of impressive features. To begin with, it was developed by a scientist, which is enough to click “add to cart”. For the icing on the cake, it’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and protects fabrics from odor for up to five washes, so an order of this bad boy lasts for weeks. And if you use it around your house, it’s a product that will clean your house in less than an hour. Just spray and walk away.
What I love about Swiff Spray
- Created by a scientist
- Pocket spray fun to look at and use
- Protects more than clothing, including pet beds, blankets, upholstery and gym equipment.
- Lasts up to five washes, if not more
- Water-based formula
- Without perfume
- Chemical free and 100% natural
Consider these factors before buying Swiff Spray
- Not an alternative to deodorant
- In my experience, it only protects clean clothes, not already smelly clothes.
- At $30 for a 1 fluid ounce container, it’s pricey
Can I spray Swiff on my skin?
Yes! Swiff Spray is safe to use directly on the skin. The brand claims that spraying it on the skin will produce the same odor-fighting effects, but for best results, we recommend spraying it on clothes first, then on the skin if desired. It is not necessary to spray Swiff on the skin unless you want extra protection with sleeveless tops.
What happens if I spray Swiff on dirty clothes instead of clean clothes?
When used on dirty clothes, Swiff coats dirt, oil and germs on clothes instead of fabrics, according to the brand. This means that Swiff washes away with dirt and cannot perform as intended. Think of Swiff as a preventative laundry hack that keeps clothes from getting stinky.
What other reviewers have to say
Swiff Vaporizer has many happy customers who have found smart, everyday uses for this laundry product. Here’s what a few buyers noted:
“For years I tried to overcome the stench of going to a rock gym, going without socks and using my favorite pair of climbing shoes just to leave the gym feeling feeling aware that the sthe smell of the hoe follows me everywhere and lingers wherever the shoes have been kept,” Hadi writes. “With Swiff, I haven’t had any issues with odor or smell in my climbing shoes or gym bag since applying it. This spray is amazing and super easy to use!
“I use Swiff to keep my dog’s coat smelling fresh,” writes Hyoju, a verified Swiff buyer. “I spray it after a bath, it works really well!! My dog sneezes a lot when I use other dog air freshener sprays (maybe he doesn’t like chemicals), but he doesn’t sneeze with Swiff.
Mark adds: “This stuff is awesome!! Totally made a difference in my workout clothes, especially the poly blends which are supposed to wick away moisture (but definitely not odor)! My only complaintI would have liked the bottle to be bigger. I definitely have to keep this as a staple among my laundry products.
As a 100% fragrance-free odor protector, Swiff Spray is impressive. Although it didn’t work as an alternative to deodorant, it did protect my clothes from the stink after long hot days outdoors and activities around the house. If you need an extra layer of odor protection on clothing and upholstery, Swiff is your new best friend. This is my new favorite laundry hack because I don’t have to worry about scrubbing my clothes before washing them. Swiff does the heavy lifting for me.
