The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society invites families with furry friends to join in the fun and celebrate the return of the annual dog walk! This popular event is held on Saturday, September 17. Registration can be done in advance or on site the day of the event, from 11am. The walk itself will officially start at noon. If you can’t attend the party but still want to support our local animal shelter, you can make a contribution to the event online by clicking here.

This year’s event celebrates the memory of Diane Matthews-Nelson who was a strong supporter of the annual dog walk. She, through her active participation, has succeeded in raising thousands of dollars for the animals at the shelter. Undeterred by the suspension of the event due to the pandemic, she was still active in finding other ways to provide support. An animal lover, we miss her a lot for her participation but more for her caring and generous spirit. In her honor, the top individual gift collector will receive the Diane Matthews-Nelson Award in addition to receiving the award.

As always, the Sault Ste. The Marie Humane Society has many animals available for adoption. To see current pets looking for forever homes, please click here for cats, here for dogs, and here for other animals available and looking for love.

Currently, The Humane Society is not open for in-person visitation and application for adoption must be submitted in advance. Adoption forms are available online or you can go in person to 962 Second Line East to get a hard copy. Complete the application and submit it to the Humane Society, then you will be contacted to arrange an in-person meeting with your potential new love.

If you are unable to take on a full-time pet or are unsure if you can fit a pet into your life, the Humane Society is also recruiting foster homes to help you pet care, short term. For more information on becoming a foster family for an animal in need, click here.

You can also help by donating cash or food – either kibble or wet food (pie is best).

There are so many ways to support the efforts of our local Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, but there’s nothing more fun than taking part in this year’s Dogwalk!
