Danbury’s Ocean State job package officially opens to fill vacant Toys’ R Us space

DANBURY – Ocean State Job Lot is officially open for business in the Danbury Square shopping center.

The discount clearance retailer opened its new Backus Avenue location this week in the 45,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Toys’ R Us, which closed in 2018 after the brand filed for bankruptcy.

Despite a changing business climate, Ocean State Job Lot decided to open the new store in Danbury as part of the company’s commitment to regional expansion and growth.

The company was not only looking forward to “filling a big vacancy at a popular mall,” according to Ocean State Job Lot store operations manager Paul Cox, but “to creating new jobs when many struggle to find work”.

Nearly 50 full-time and part-time associates have been hired to work at Danbury’s Ocean State Job Lot, which is the company’s 29th Rhode Island-based retail store in Connecticut and the first in the western part of the State. There are 145 stores nationwide.

“We look forward to sharing the unique Ocean State Job Lot shopping experience with our new neighbors in Danbury,” said Rich Stomski, Team Leader of the Ocean State Job Lot store in Danbury.

Ocean State Job Lot sells a variety of products – from food, home decor and pet supplies to clothing, essential health products, and beauty products – at discounted prices.

“From seasonal items to household essentials – including spring lawn cleaning supplies, pantry staples, paper items and a wide range of cleaning supplies – Ocean State Job Lot offers pricing and selection unbeatable, ”said Stomski.

Ocean State Job Lot is more than a discount retailer. It also has a charity that works to help communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation has distributed over $ 1.5 million in personal protective equipment to North East Police and Fire Departments – including nearly $ 12,000 to Roxbury Fire Departments after that an intentional fire destroyed its stock two months ago.

With the opening of the Ocean State Job Lot store in Danbury, the foundation plans to donate thousands of personal protective equipment to the city’s police and fire departments.
