COVID-19 Halloween: Most Popular Pet Costumes

ST. LOUIS – Do you dress up your pet for Halloween?

It turns out that around 29 million people do it every year, so you’re not alone!

A National Retail Federation survey found that the most popular pet costumes are pumpkins, hot dogs, and superheroes.

According to the survey, around 10% of pet parents plan to dress their furry friends in a pumpkin costume.

Vets advise starting with something simple like a bandana to see if your pet is comfortable. If so, you can add other items.

Dr Jennifer Freeman, a veterinarian with PetSmart, said that while Halloween may look different this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is still possible to have a safe and fun time with your pet from company.

“If you choose to celebrate Halloween by dressing up your pet this year, it’s important to carefully present the costumes to your pet so they don’t get stressed out,” Freeman said. “Start by using simple accessories like a bandana instead of a full-fledged outfit. If they allow for something simple, reward them with a treat and praise, then gradually introduce additional costume elements to make your pet comfortable. “

She also said the costumes should always allow full freedom of movement so that your pets can still walk, bark, meow, eat and drink without any issues. In addition, it is important to ensure that there are no attachments or accompanying accessories that are easy to chew and / or swallow.
